#classicmac #vintagecomputing ![[MacAvatar.jpeg]] My Mac SE was revived and gifted from [@scrockwell](https://kb.schrockwell.com/Vintage+Computing/Macintosh+SE/Macintosh+SE). It currently lives on my desk at work for daily note taking, IRC, and the occasional Lemmings or Oregon Trail. # Specs - Model M5011 - 4MB RAM - SuperDrive - BlueSCSI V2 # TODO - ✓ Re-cap analog board - ✓ Re-cap power supply - ✓ Replace fan on analog board - ✓ Service floppy drive - ✓ Troubleshoot stripes on startup - ✓ Clean RAM pins - ✓ Clean ROM IC pins - ✓ It was the cold solder joints!!! - ✓ Order internal SCSI drive replacement (ZuluSCSI? BlueSCSI?) - ✓ Install BlueSCSI internal drive - ✓ Replace gear in floppy drive servo - ✓ Re-align floppy drive to front slot - ✓ Final reassembly # Modern power supply replacements The original power supply (Apple 820-0385-A / Hitachi) has been re-capped. In the event that the power supply fails, there are a few options for modern drop-in replacements, in varying costs and form-factors. [Most complete, most expensive](https://www.tindie.com/products/baby_face_electronics/macintosh-se30-universal-psu-replacement/): [Mid complete, mid expensive](https://www.tindie.com/products/dekunukem/picopsu-adaptor-for-macintosh-se-se30/) [Least complete, mid expensive](https://www.tindie.com/products/ttdesign/diy-macintosh-se30-se-ac-dc-power-supply-board/) [Least complete, mid expensive](https://github.com/tt-design-studio/psu-mac-se/) [Abomination](https://bylenga.ddns.net/index.php?page=SE_ATX.php) # Build Log ## 2025-07-07 - Got a Dayna E/SE Ethernet Card off eBay and installed. - Installed the DaynaPORT Installer from [Mac Driver Museum: Network Card Drivers](https://vintageapple.org/macdrivers/network.shtml) (DaynaPORT7.7.2.sea) via mounting the drive image in Basilisk II and installing to the image. ## 11/29/2024 - Cleaned case with soap and water - Final reassembly (BlueSCSI disconnected) ## 11/27/2024 - Replaced eject gear on floppy drive - Got internal BlueSCSI working and booting ## 11/22/2024 - [Serviced](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eC1nUblJpwQ) and tested floppy drive - it works! Very well! - The drive was _extremely_ dusty, presumably from air intake through the drive. - Did not replace the ejection gear - hasn't arrived yet - Removed hard disk drive - it powers up but does not function ## 11/19/2024 - Reassembled the SE for testing after recapping the analog and PSU boards - It intermittently powers up to big vertical lines (no bong), which possibly indicates failing RAM. Will remove and clean the contacts on the RAM sticks. ![[Pasted image 20250218145910.png]] - Did finally get it to boot from internal and external floppy drives. HDD powers up but is not recognized at all - presumed dead. - Floppy inject is very weak, eject works but is weak. Reads disks. It's a SuperDrive! - Ordered BlueSCSI V2 internal drive. --- - Removed RAM and ROM chips and cleaned all contacts with 91% IPA. Computer still sometimes shows black & white bars on startup, but will eventually boot if power cycled a couple times. - With the Poking Spoon, when I poke the analog board connector of big cord that goes to the logic board, it can resolve the black bars. It can also cause a reboot and a BONG again. So I suspect a cold solder joint on this connector, similar to the Plus. - Yup! Found cold solder joints on that connector AND others. I re-flowed the solder to all those joints. Seems solid now, although bars appear VERY briefly on startup before the bong (normal?). ![[Pasted image 20250218145847.png]] ## 11/18/2024 - Replaced 60x25mm fan with Noctua brand ![[Pasted image 20250218145838.png]] - Re-capped the power supply. Found evidence of leaky caps. Examined and repaired potential cold solder joints. ![[Pasted image 20250218145821.png]] - The -12V line still reads around -9V (fluctuating) without any load. Will reassemble and test it in the PC anyway, maybe it just needs a load. ## 11/15/2024 - Re-capped the analog board - untested until the computer is reassembled later - Scrubbed down logic board with toothbrush and q-tips and isopropyl, which cleaned up some of the rust; no damage on the bottom of the PCB ## 11/14/2024 - First power-up: fans spin, boots up, looking for floppy - Tried to put in a floppy, it froze, power cycled - Now screen is stuck with vertical bars - Poking things seems to help a little bit - Back the floppy icon now. The disk drive DOES eject but it won't ready any disks on startup - No light or activity on hard disk - Analog board - No signs of leaky or bulging capacitors - Power supply - +5V and +12V are okay, but -12V is reading at -10V - Some signs of capacitor leakage - I ordered the wrong capacitor kit… it's not a Sony CR-44 power supply, it's an [Apple 820-0385-A](https://console5.com/store/macintosh-se-30-power-supply-apple-820-0385-a-hitachi.html) - Digital board - ER3S 3.6V (1/2 AA) battery is dead, no signs of battery leakage, but some corrosion (from previous battery? humidity?)
