I'm back with another tech-related video. And today, I'm taking a look at something that Banggood have sent me. This is the Owon XDM1041 digital multimeter. This is a benchtop style multimeter. It's not a particularly new model, but it's the first time I've taken a look at it anyway. So, thanks Banggood for sending it over. Let's get it on the bench and take a closer look. So, today we've got Owon XDM1041, which is a 55,000 count benchtop **[0:35](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=35)** multimeter with a 3.5-in TFT screen. So, not a lot to see on the outside of the box, really. Nope. Let's have a look. Here we go. Straight away, we're in. Is there a book? Possibly. Well, there's the meter itself. Okay. We've got some multimeter probes, which look okay. Pretty standard. We've got a cable here, which is a USB. Got the croc clips. **[1:07](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=67)** And we've got our manual and a spare fuse. Let's get this out of the bag. So, it's kind of a It's described as a bench multimeter, but it's not a full-depth bench unit like you would get with these ones. But, it is a similar sort of size profile to those. So, I know they do a few versions of this. This is the counts. So, we've got some function keys here. We've got AC and DC volts, AC and **[1:42](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=102)** DC current. We've got resistance, continuity, and diode. There's our on-off. We've got capacitance, frequency, and temperature. What more could you want? Range there with an up and down. It's got a math function. So, it looks like it's got quite a few things. Got a whole array of ports down here. So, we've got our multi-function port, com ports, and we've got microamps and milliamps, and we've got a 10-amp there. And it says CAT 1,000 V, CAT 2 600 V. So, it's Is it got rub It's got rubber **[2:17](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=137)** feet on the bottom. So, it seems fairly stable. You're going to have to hold it when you're pressing these, aren't you? It's not a portable device, but it's not really a what I would call a bench device that you could stack. You know, I like to stack stuff up. But, it's This could be a a good one for just having just having sort of on the back of your bench like that. Once you've got it set up and you set your parameters of what you're doing with it and you you're testing something. Okay, let's see what else we got **[2:50](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=170)** in the pack. We've got some croc clips and our USB to hook it up. And let's have a look at these probes. These look like fairly standard. I think these are much the same as what we saw with the other Owon units. I think they are, actually. I mean, they're okay. 1,000 V max, CAT 3. 10 amps. All right. Are they not particularly sharp. They look like the same ones you get with most of the **[3:22](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=202)** Owon stuff. Okay. And we've got a book. Let's have a quick look at the book. So, we've got a spare fuse in here, 250 V 1 amp. Oh, look. We've got some specifications, so you can have a look at those. Well, we'll see. The proof of the pudding is going to be in the testing. So, we're going to give it a thorough test. General specifications there, so 3 and 1/2-in TFT screen with a resolution of 480 by 320, if you needed to know that. Warm-up time of 30 minutes. So, considerably less than most full-size **[3:55](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=235)** benchtop multimeters. I suppose that's the advantage of these smaller ones is a faster warm-up time. All right. So, we've got general warranty. We've got safety information, measurement limits. Okay, so it's quite a comprehensive manual then. You've got a quick start there. Won't go through it all, but it's nice when they give you screenshots and stuff like this, so you can see what you're doing and learn it. You've got data recording and stuff here. Correct connections, that's quite user-friendly. If you've not used a multimeter before or you've not used a **[4:28](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=268)** bench one, maybe you're used to one that doesn't have quite so many ports on the front. Let's hook it up and see what the display is like. Looks like we've got a peel. Let's get rid of that. I don't mess about with peels. They're gone. Right, let's turn on. Loading. Click of a relay. Nice big display. Quite like that. I get the feeling that if this is accurate, I might quite like it. **[5:02](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=302)** I quite like the unusual form factor. But, I think for me, I like to see it sitting raked back a little bit. I'd almost want to put some some bigger feet on the front of it, so it's it's a bit more like that. Okay. So, what are we on at the moment? DC volts. So, ah, millivolts. Volts DC, volts AC. I've got it. So, we're we're changing AC and DC with this. And then, the range. I presume if I press the range button, manual 5 V, **[5:37](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=337)** auto 5 V. Okay. So, we have a manual 50 V, 500 V, 1,000 V, or auto. All right. So, I guess we're using these function buttons then. Oh, we can select the range here. Look, so you don't have to go into that. That's quite good. So, if you want 5 V, you press there. All right. And you can change your speed, can you? Oh, mid. High, low. All right. Function is volts. That's where you can swap it to millivolts. Excellent. And there's your rel off or on. Let's **[6:14](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=374)** hook it up. And as always, I like to check out continuity first. So, let's go to continuity, which is going to be here, isn't it? There we go. Continuity. So, beeper off. Why would you want that? Beeper on. All right. So, let's try continuity then. What's it like straight out of the box? Very loud. Okay. Let's try it with with **[6:51](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=411)** my Aneng probes. It's fairly quick, but it won't it won't do this this business. But, it's not bad. Okay. Okay. So, let's pop the probes back in that came with it and we'll have a look at diode mode. So, firstly, we need to select diode mode, which we can do there. Diode beeper on. So, it beeps for diode mode because it's more of a bench type meter. Cuz there's **[7:26](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=446)** very few handheld multimeters, apart from the Fluke and the Alien Tech, that do diode beep. And that is a loud diode beep. And it gives you forward voltage. So, no beep for standard silicon diode, but it gives you forward voltage of 0.522. Now, it does have a threshold on here, so we can change that threshold. So, let's put it up to 0.6 V and go and go again on the same diode. Yep, you get your beep. That's fine. **[8:02](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=482)** Let's try the LED test. All right. Forward voltage there. It's giving me 1.76 on the red. 1.85 on the green. 2.53 on the blue. Now, this is the first Owon that's given me a forward voltage on the blue LED. And on the white, it's also giving me forward voltage, 2.58, which is pretty good. All right. Let's see what it's putting out in diode mode. 3.29. Okay, that's respectable. Yeah, **[8:47](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=527)** nothing wrong with that. Okay, so let's take a look at DC volts. We're going to use the PDVS2 mini for that. And we go. So, we're in DC volts. I've got it on auto range. Okay, so we'll start with 1 V. Very good. All right. 2 V. Yeah. Yeah. Three. Okay. Four. Five. **[9:23](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=563)** Six. Seven. Bang on. Eight. Nine. Yep. And 10. Right. Okay. So, that's actually much better than spec. Yeah, accuracy is very good here. Let's reverse the terminals and see what we get. **[9:58](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=598)** >> minus 0.9998. All right, so it's pretty much there. So, let's try it with some millivolts. So, where it says function volts, if I press this, you'll hear a relay click. It's now taking it into millivolts DC. So, it's a separate function rather than in with the ranges. Okay, so at 100 millivolts, good. 10 millivolts, yep. **[10:32](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=632)** 1 millivolt, okay. 0.1, yep. So, on DC volts, overall, it's actually very good. Very good. Right, so we're going to take a look at DC current now. So, I've brought this meter in as my control multimeter, so I can monitor what's coming out of my current source. So, we're going to go to DC current. I've got it in auto range. Function is amps. Can I change that to **[11:06](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=666)** microamps? So, I am going to start at 10 microamps. So, let's hook this up. So, we want to be in this one to start with up to 600 milliamps, then we need to swap to the 10 amp socket. Here we go. All right. So, we got yep, 10 microamps. Good with that. Okay, 100 microamps. Yep, 1 milliamp. It's changed ranges. Yep. Let's go 10 **[11:43](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=703)** milliamps. Yep. Great. No problem. And we can go 100 milliamps. Yes, absolutely fine. And then we need to swap now to this socket. All right, so I need to change my function now to amps. And we'll go 1 amp. And that is pretty bang on with the control multimeter. So, on DC current, yeah, it's pretty good. **[12:17](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=737)** So, we're going to look at AC volts now. Can we start in millivolts? Yes, we can. I'm going to start with 100 millivolts. Okay, a little bit over compared to the control meter there. Right, let's go 10 volts. Okay, let's go 100 volts. Yep, okay. And let's go 200. **[12:55](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=775)** Yep, that's pretty good. And let's try 300. Yep, no problems at all. So, it's good on AC volts. So, AC current then, starting at 100 microamps. All right, so we're somewhat over here. Okay, and 1 milliamp. Yeah, it's within spec. Okay, 10 **[13:29](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=809)** milliamps. Okay, ever so slightly over again. Yeah, not bad. Okay, 100 milliamps. Okay, good. I'll move to the 10 amp socket cuz we can only do up to 600 milliamps on this one. And we'll do 1 amp. Pretty bang on. **[14:04](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=844)** That's okay. Not bad. Okay, so let's take a look at resistance then. We've got a little bit of residual here, so we can turn relative mode on. There we go. And we're on auto range. So, starting as usual at 1 ohm. Just under. Five, yeah, a little under and 10, bang on at 10. **[14:37](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=877)** Lovely. How about 100? Yep, slightly over. Hmm, 1K. Switch range, yep, and a little over. Okay. Switch boxes for 10K. Yep, had a little think, but bang on. Nice. Okay. 100K. Hmm, yep, ever so slightly under. How **[15:15](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=915)** about 1 meg? It's going to change range. Little under. More under than I would have expected. Oh, no, it's picking up 10 megs. Pretty good. Right, so moving on to capacitance then. Right, again we're in auto range, and I'm interested to see if it picks up the 160 picofarad residual of my decade box. **[15:57](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=957)** Or not. What's going on there? It's in auto range. Manual 50 nanofarads, it's not having it. This is the first meter I think I've come across that won't pick up that 160 picofarads. I'll just double-check what the spec is on this, but let's put it back on auto then. All right, well let's try 1 nanofarad. Yes, it does. **[16:31](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=991)** And bizarrely now, it pick is picking up the residual with the 1 nanofarad. So, it's picking up the residual of the box as 140 picofarads, but it wasn't picking it up with this off. No. Hmm, okay. Put on 1 nanofarad, it does. Picks up 1 nanofarad and the residual. All right, interesting. All right, so 5 nanofarads. Okay, respectable. 10, **[17:08](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=1028)** slightly over. Okay. 100, 100.3. Okay. How about 1 microfarad? Yep, ever so slightly over. Okay. So, not bad overall on capacitance. Right, let's take a look at frequency then. And we're going to start at 50 hertz. **[17:53](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=1073)** Yes. Very good. It's also giving me duty cycle at the same time there. All right, 10 hertz. How responsive is this? Not brilliant. So, 1 hertz. Will it go down to 1 hertz? Yes, it actually will. All right, let's go 100 hertz. Let's go up now. Yeah, 400. **[18:31](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=1111)** Yeah, just under 1K. Yep. 10K. Yeah, let's go 1 meg. Okay, consistently slightly under. So, as far as temperature goes, it's probably not something that you're going to use much on your multimeter, but compared with the Ailunce Tech, I've got these probes on top of my filming lights **[19:06](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=1146)** where it's rather warm. So, yeah, it's kind of ballpark. Okay, so some of the extra other bits that we haven't looked at yet, you've got a run and a stop, which is basically your hold. So, that will stop. It will freeze it at that moment. There you go. You've got a math function here, which will bring up a menu on the side here, which will just give you the option to do max min, which is currently off. But if you turn it on, you get that **[19:38](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=1178)** displayed along the bottom there, but it does make the rest of your display a little bit smaller. So, turn that off there. Back, takes you back to the main menu. Obviously, you've got your range there and your up and down. So, the utility takes you into the menu there. So, you can change things like your language and your backlight. It gives you your version numbers there. And you can change your serial settings, your clock. You can restore to default. **[20:11](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=1211)** And you can change the power on setting. So, you can either have it on the last thing you used or the default one, which is normally DC volts. All right. So, I've got some voltage going in there. So, if I press record, you've got manual or auto. So, we'll just go manual. You can see it brings up like a little chart here. So, we just go save and there you go. Number one, DC volts, 13.449 volts DC. So, yeah, there you go. So, you can save **[20:43](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=1243)** your data in there. It is a little bit intensive maneuvering around these menus though, so I can't imagine it's something you're going to use much of, but it is there if you want to use it. So, the only other notable thing really is there is a USB port on the back there, which you can use as a serial communication to your computer. So, you can program it if you're familiar with Skippy. There is a programming guide you can get from the Owon website, but it doesn't appear to be have any dedicated PC software that would run on **[21:18](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=1278)** Windows or anything. Not that I could find anyway. So, this brings me to the conclusion really. What did I make of the Owon XDM1041? Well, I'm a bit late to the party, fashionably late I like to think. This has been out for a few years now, so I'm quite late reviewing it, but it's the first time I've had the opportunity to check it out. The display is quite nice. It would have been nicer if you could get rid of this when you're not using it and have a slightly bigger **[21:49](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=1309)** display. It is quite a nice display. It's quite simple to use. I do like the the min max thing, but some of the menu stuff's quite contrived. You have to like the min max, you have to do like two or three different presses to get that. I'd I would rather have it so you press that and it comes on rather than having to go through all these all these menus. It's reasonably accurate. Seems to be well within its spec. It's about 66 pounds on Banggood at the moment, **[22:21](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=1341)** although we do have coupon codes. So, if you can get it for a good price, it's worth it if you want a multimeter in this format. If you want this sort of semi desktop format, then it might be worth taking look at. It is quite neat. Doesn't take up a lot of room. You can just have it sitting there. If you especially if you're monitoring something like you wanted to monitor some voltage or something and just have it in the in the corner of your bench doing stuff. Yeah, I think it's it's got its uses still. Even though it's an old **[22:55](https://youtu.be/zTtXa6ez7t0?t=1375)** model, I think it still does have its uses. It's a lovely display, really nice clear screen. It's a shame there's no trend graph or anything. Would have been nice to have a a graph display. Well, there you go. The Owon XDM1041.
